how to cover a seat cushion

A professional upholsterer would charge you at least $25.00-$40.00 to cover a drop in seat.  It is the easiest upholstery job to do, even for a beginner.  I wanted to cover my bar stools with the new fabrics I'm bringing into my kitchen and living room.  Turn the chair upside down and remove the screws the hold the seat to the chair.  If there are many layers of covering take the time with a flat blade screw driver, side cutters and a hammer to remove all the fabric.  Replace the padding if necessary.  Cut your fabric 3-4" larger than your seat, taking into account the height.  Start on one side call that North and staple in the center.  You can use a regular staple gun or an electric gun if you're lucky.  Do the same on the opposite side then the same on the East and West sides.  Then starting on one side of your first staples pull tightly and staple to the corner or if your seat is round like mine go to the next staple.  Finish around the whole seat.  Trim off the excess fabric and  check to see if any of the staples need an extra tap of the hammer.  If the seat had a dust cover replace that with new fabric  but for most seats this isn't necessary.  Enjoy your new seats.

  1. Hey Terri,
I really like the color of the new fabric you used to recover the bar stools. I bet this looks great with the color of your walls. Great Job!!!!! Kathy
